Artwork Introduction

CHON ERIN, an artist who bridges fine art and design, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design from Seoul National University and further specialized in Painting and Printmaking at the University of Iowa. She currently teaches Art Practice and Contemporary Art in the Department of Culture Design Management at Underwood International College, Yonsei University. Chon has held three solo exhibitions in Seoul in 2019 and 2022, and a drawing exhibition titled "Time Records" in Washington, DC, in the spring of 2020.

CHON ERIN’s work is characterized by experimental drawing and installation pieces that explore how artists and viewers share aesthetic experiences. Her drawings often feature grids filled with countless small dots, meticulously created to record the concept of time. These grids, made on blank paper, reflect her contemplation on the quantity and quality of time. For CHON , a "day" is not defined by the scientific rotation of the Earth but by the period from the start to the completion of her artwork.

The artist captures the fleeting and precious moments of life within her work, presenting time as a tangible mass rather than a linear structure of past, present, and future. The completion of her piece signifies the end of a day. In CHON's art, a "dot" represents the smallest unit of line and expression, and it symbolizes action. To her, the "dot (Punkt)" is both an existent void and the primordial time that creates a "complete day" within the frame she constructs. By repetitively inscribing the "representation of the dot" within her self-made square frames, CHON leaves behind traces of her actions, with the dots forming meaningful voids.

To visualize the "absence: void" inherent in dots, the artist embraces the limitations of metaphor. Like a Möbius strip, where the start and end merge into one, the dot represents an ultimate point allowing for "eternal poetry".

Gallery MONDEOUVERT stated, "Each dot placed on the canvas captures a moment of 'now', and one can feel the passage of time through its repetition. We hope that within the 'day' created by the artist, viewers will draw their own boundaries of a 'day' and find a moment of repose".

Spring 2012, Drawing and Communication - Instructor of Record

Yonsei University, Techno Art Division in Underwood International College.

The purpose of this course is to draw, especially by hand. For designers and artists, hand drawing

is basic and yet the most intuitive and effective way to communicate with others. To learn to

draw, one must understand how to see or to read the world around us and also how to share ideas

and thoughts on what we see/read. It is a critical class for any student who needs to develop

visual communication skills in the design field. No drawing experience is required but an open

mind is a must-have. This class is taught in English.

elements and apply them to their practices in 2D format. Students should also acquire necessary

knowledge of materials and proper technical skills to achieve their aesthetic goals. Both digital

Spring 2012 ~ Fall 2012, Art and Space I & II - Instructor of Record

Sungshin Women's University, Department of Industrial Design

Advanced course. Creating objects and placing them in space means also creating negative

space. Without thoughtful consideration of negative space, the harmony and balance in

composition cannot be achieved. In this course, students are required to create self portraits (can

be interpreted metaphorically) in the form of negative space. This invisible/intangible form

becomes visible by the objects which are created solely for defining this negative space. This

study requires deep understanding of how we recognize objects in space, and trained eyes to see

what is not seen. This course is also related to the aesthetic study in forms. The students pick one

of the artists in art history and research the formal qualities in their practice of the arts. This helps

students not only to get inspiration from art but also to understand how they position themselves

in the history of art as a designer.

• Design curriculum, teach basic skills and concepts, lead group discussion, critique, grade,

and meet with students during office hours.

them in the actual design process. Communication skills with visual/verbal language will be also
